A Tweet from Mark Hoppus (@markhoppus) from Blink 182
The fact that music can induce goosebumps, draw a tear, inspire, and connect is one of my favorite parts of being a human.
Isn’t that the truth? No matter what music is playing, somehow it’ll connect with you…
For the music at your event, you’ll want it to be fun, thought-provoking, inspiring, connecting, etc. Finding a good DJ is the start of that process. Meet with him/her, and get a sense of their personality. If you can, and they’ll let you, see if you can attend an event that they are DJing, so you can see how they interact with the crowd, what type of music is popular, etc. Remember you can always veto any song you absolutely don’t want played at your event. They will have that list handy at your event just in case.
Pick a good variety of songs that you know everyone will like, including some slow songs, and some older songs (for your parents, and grandparents). Remember people will dance to anything, but make sure it isn’t just music that you’ll listen to. You’re trying to appeal to a huge audience of people. Ask your friends and family for ideas. Listen to a lot of songs. Whatever you play, people, and you!, will have fun with it. Even include some dance songs, like the Cupid Shuffle or the Electric Slide (the Hustle)! That’ll get a huge group dancing and having fun!
Overall, make certain the music is you. Meaning if you don’t like it, don’t have it played. If you like it, and dance to it, people will join you. AND HAVE FUN! That’s what it’s all about right?
More on music later…this is just the beginning!
